Atlantis - short storyATLANTIS
I am seated on the bottom of the ocean just off the border of Spain, with less than five minutes left of oxygen in the bulky tank on my back, it beeped in alarm to surface. It was beautiful; I've finally discovered it- and it was amazing! It shone so brightly, a hazel color just like my wife's eyes, an underwater, undiscovered palace, no longer the mystery it had once been.
Nearing the dense, brown seaweed closer and closer; the most beautiful humming penetrated my ears. So it seems that my last minutes would be spent in this abundant, exultant, palace of marble. I swam, in the center of two concrete tall concrete pillars; my eyes were rose from the rubble of the decomposed palace, up to the surface, which was at the most of five hundred meters away. Waste my oxygen on swimming up? Or spend my last moments dwelling in a land that I’d desired for the previous twenty years?
Yearning to swim up, back to my wife and daughter, I can’t leave them. I wanted to survive. B
Abandoned ChapelThe parish waits now,
the loneliness of corners
crawling outward on walls--
chipped away by the wind,
and held together
by silk spindles;
cobwebs align them like the membranes of memories,
the cut of a jewel in an broken window
against the sun
where beads of rain
gather in a mesh of strands
a new Mosaic
against the backdrop of a cemetery;
My eyes seek out the sermon
in close proximity,
paint no distance
between headstone and cloud;
elegies topple each other
in their climb to heaven
as light trickles
over the shade,
breathes a new glow over snuffed candles.
I feel the weight in these empty rows,
how a breath couldn't cease to be breath
in the midst of prayer.
